Web site will be a great help to Indian women
Breast cancer in Indian women causes high mortality(>50% fatality rate) because a majority of women in India have advaced stages of breast cancer at the time of diagnosis(please add some information about Stages of Breast Cancer:. Breast cancer is given a diagnosis of Early Stage disease when it is diagnosed at stages-1 and stage-2. Breast cancer in stages-3 and stage 4 are considered late.

Stage-1: is the earliest stage of cancer, when the tumor size is less than 2 Cm and there is no spread of tumor into the armpit lymph glands. The cure rate of cancer at this stage is over 80%.and breast can be saved from surgical removal (mastectomy).

Stage-2: is a cancer where the tumor size is more than 2- Cm but less than 5 Cm or when the regional lymph nodes are involved by the cancer cells. The cure rate at this stage is 60% to 70%.and most women can save their breast and may not need to undergo mastectomy.

Stage-3: Tumors are those which are larger than 5 Cm or show involvement of the skin on the surface of the breast. The cure rate of cancer at this stage is only 30% to 40% despite best efforts at treatment. Mastectomy is usually required to control stage-3 breast cancer.

Stage-4: cancer are those which have far advanced ulcerated tumors which have spread to distant organs in the body such as lungs, bones or liver. Stage-4 breast cancer is largely incurable.

In the West where women seek early medical attention more than 80% of breast cancers are treated at Stage-1(50%) or stage-2 (30%) and the cure rates are 70% to 80%.

In India more than 70% of the Breast cancers are far advanced(stage-3 and 4) by the time women seek medical attention and the cure rates are leass than 30-40%.

If all women were made aware that any thickening or lump in the breast can be cancerous, they will seek early medical examination. By doing so, they can, not only save their breast by avoiding mastectomy, they will live normal lives after successful treatment of their cancer.
